Lagos Unveils Road Closures and Alternate Routes for 2026 City Marathon

The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive traffic management plan in preparation for the 2026 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 14.

According to state authorities, the temporary traffic adjustments are aimed at ensuring the seamless execution of the annual sporting event while reducing inconvenience to motorists and residents across key parts of the city.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that this year’s marathon will feature two race categories — a 42-kilometre full marathon and a 10-kilometre race — both running concurrently along designated corridors.

The 42km race is set to kick off at Ahmadu Bello Way near the MRS Filling Station, moving along the full stretch of the Coastal Road, which will serve as the finishing point.

Meanwhile, participants in the 10km race will begin at Durosimi Etti in Lekki Phase 1. The route will pass through Ozumba Mbadiwe, Bishop Oluwole, and Akin Adesola, before concluding at Sanusi Fafunwa.

Authorities confirmed that all connecting roads, intersections, and adjoining streets along both race routes will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic from 12:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on the day of the marathon. However, roads will be reopened in phases as runners move past specific points.

To ensure public safety and compliance, officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside other security personnel, will be deployed across affected areas. Their responsibilities will include restricting unauthorized vehicle access to race paths and guiding motorists toward alternative routes.

Residents and commuters are advised to plan ahead, explore alternate transportation options, and expect controlled movement within the impacted corridors during the event period.

Officials emphasized that these temporary restrictions form part of coordinated efforts to successfully host the 11th edition of the marathon while maintaining order and safety across Lagos.
