Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State — The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a man accused of defrauding no fewer than 175 job seekers under the guise of securing school feeding employment for them.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, said the suspect allegedly deceived victims by claiming he had the authority to facilitate recruitment into government-approved primary and secondary schools.
How the Alleged Scam Worked
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect demanded ₦30,000 from each applicant as a so-called processing fee. Acting in good faith, the job seekers paid the money in anticipation of employment that never existed.
Investigators estimate that the suspect collected a total of ₦5.2 million from the victims. The suspect, a resident of the KCC area of Birnin Kebbi, was found to have no authorization from any government agency to conduct recruitment on its behalf.
Police Action and Public Warning
The police confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue. He is expected to be charged to court once inquiries are concluded.
SP Usman urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to verify recruitment claims through official government channels before making any payments. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, stressing that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in line with the law.
